Accessibility Statement

Our Commitment
The National Fallen Truck Driver Remembrance Foundation is committed to making nftdf.org accessible to every person who needs it — including individuals with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities. We believe that every family member of a fallen driver, every supporter, and every person who wants to learn about our mission deserves equal access to our website, programs, and resources.
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), define how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. This is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time checklist. We conduct periodic accessibility reviews and address reported barriers as they are identified.
Keyboard Navigation
All interactive elements on our website — including navigation menus, buttons, links, and form fields — are operable via keyboard alone without requiring a mouse or touch input. Tab order follows a logical reading sequence that matches the visual layout of the page. Focus indicators are clearly visible on all interactive elements, allowing keyboard users to track their location on the page at all times.
We do not use keyboard traps — elements that capture keyboard focus and prevent the user from navigating away — except in modal dialogs, where focus is intentionally contained and a clear mechanism to close the dialog and return focus is provided.
Screen Reader Compatibility
Our website is built using semantic HTML elements that provide meaningful structure to assistive technologies. We use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) labels and roles where native HTML semantics are insufficient to convey the purpose of an element. The site has been tested for compatibility with major screen readers, including NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows), and VoiceOver (macOS and iOS).
All images that convey information include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes so screen readers skip them without unnecessary verbosity. All form fields are programmatically associated with their visible labels.
Color and Contrast
Text and interactive element colors on our site are selected to meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA minimum contrast ratios: 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and user interface components. We do not use color as the sole means of conveying information — where color is used to communicate status or meaning, we supplement it with text labels, icons, or patterns.
Alternative Text for Images
Every meaningful image on our site includes descriptive alternative text that conveys the purpose or content of the image in words. This includes portrait photographs on the Memorial Wall, editorial photography, and iconography. Alternative text for Memorial Wall portraits is drawn from the tribute submission to be accurate and respectful. AI-enhanced images retain their original descriptive labels.
Form Accessibility
All forms on our website — including donation forms, tribute submission forms, newsletter signup, and contact forms — include:
- Visible, descriptive labels for every input field, associated programmatically via
for/idattributes oraria-label. - Clear indication of required fields, both visually and for assistive technologies.
- Inline error messages that identify the specific field with a problem and provide clear instructions for how to correct it.
- Sufficient time to complete forms without automatic timeouts that cannot be extended.
- No CAPTCHA systems that rely solely on visual image recognition; where bot prevention is needed, we use accessible challenge methods.
Third-Party Content Limitations
Some portions of our Site rely on third-party services, including Stripe for payment processing and embedded social media sharing tools. We do not control the accessibility of third-party interfaces. If you encounter an accessibility barrier within a third-party component, we encourage you to report it to us so we can evaluate alternatives, and also to report it directly to the third-party provider.
PDF documents linked from our site may not always be fully screen-reader accessible. We are working to remediate legacy documents and to ensure new documents meet PDF/UA standards. If you need the content of any PDF in an alternative accessible format, please contact us and we will provide it.
Reporting Accessibility Barriers
If you encounter any accessibility barrier on our website — a page you cannot navigate, content you cannot access, or a form you cannot complete — please let us know. Your report directly drives our improvement work.
To report an accessibility issue, please email accessibility@nftdrf.org with a description of the barrier you experienced, the page URL where the issue occurred, and the assistive technology or browser you were using (if applicable). We aim to acknowledge accessibility reports within five (5) business days and to provide a substantive response or resolution within thirty (30) days.
Reasonable Accommodation
If you are unable to access any content or service on our website due to a disability, we will work with you to provide access through an alternative means. This may include providing content in a different format, completing a form submission by phone or email on your behalf, or arranging other reasonable accommodations. Contact us at accessibility@nftdrf.org to request assistance.
Continuous Improvement
Accessibility is not a project with a finish line — it is an ongoing responsibility. We are committed to:
- Conducting periodic accessibility audits of our website, either internally or through third-party evaluation.
- Including accessibility review as part of our development process for new features and content.
- Addressing reported barriers promptly and transparently.
- Staying current with evolving WCAG standards and assistive technology capabilities.
- Ensuring that content added by volunteers, staff, and contributors meets our accessibility guidelines.
We are grateful to our users who help us identify gaps. Every report makes the site better for the families and communities we serve.
