The NFTDRF Awards $1.4M in Emergency Assistance Grants in 2024
Last year marked the Foundation's largest single-year disbursement since founding. Here's where the money went — and the families it reached.
In 2024, the National Fallen Truck Driver Remembrance Foundation distributed $1.4 million in emergency assistance grants to 312 families across 41 states — the largest single-year disbursement in the Foundation's history. The figure represents a 23% increase over 2023, driven by a combination of expanded program capacity, increased referral volume from fleet partners, and the launch of a new 72-hour rapid-response track for families in acute financial crisis.
Where the Money Went
The average grant disbursement in 2024 was $4,487 — a meaningful increase from the prior year's $3,920 average, reflecting the Foundation's intentional decision to concentrate resources on fewer, higher-impact awards rather than spreading thin across a larger recipient pool. Mortgage assistance and rent arrearages accounted for 38% of all funds dispersed. Funeral and burial costs, which can easily exceed $12,000 for a family with no prior financial planning, represented 27% of disbursements. Utility reconnections, vehicle payments, and immediate household bills made up the remainder.
Texas, Ohio, and Georgia saw the highest grant volumes by state — a pattern that reflects both the concentration of commercial trucking activity along major freight corridors and the Foundation's established referral relationships with fleet safety departments in those regions. Tennessee and North Carolina also saw notable increases compared to 2023.
Fastest Turnaround: Four Days
The Foundation's rapid-response track — introduced in Q2 2024 for families facing imminent eviction or utility shutoff within 30 days of a driver's death — achieved a fastest turnaround of four calendar days from initial application to funds transfer. The median turnaround across all 2024 grants was 11 days. The standard track, which handles non-urgent requests and requires additional documentation, averaged 19 days from submission to disbursement.
One Family's Experience
A family in eastern Tennessee — who asked to remain anonymous — contacted the Foundation six days after losing their father and husband, a long-haul driver with 17 years of service. The mortgage payment was due in nine days. The family had no life insurance documentation in hand and no immediate access to savings. The Foundation's grants team processed an emergency disbursement covering two months of mortgage payments within five days of the initial call. The family's case coordinator checked in again at 30 days and at 90 days. "The first call felt like someone finally understood the problem," the family wrote to the Foundation. "You didn't ask us to explain what a truck driver's schedule is like. You already knew."
What Drove the 2024 Increase
Several factors converged to make 2024 the Foundation's highest-disbursement year. Fleet partner referrals increased by 41% compared to 2023, a direct result of the Foundation's ongoing outreach to fleet safety directors who can now refer families at the point of incident notification rather than waiting weeks for families to self-identify. The Foundation also benefited from a major donor contribution in Q1 2024 that allowed the grants pool to absorb higher volume without depleting reserve funds.
"Every dollar we give out represents a family that stayed in their home, buried their person with dignity, or kept the lights on while they figured out the next step. That's what the number means." — Sandra Okafor, Director of Programs, NFTDRF
Looking Ahead to 2025
The Foundation enters 2025 with an expanded grants pool and two new state-level referral partnerships in Missouri and Arizona. A revised application process — reducing required documentation from seven items to four for families in the rapid-response track — is expected to cut the minimum turnaround time further. The Foundation's goal for 2025 is to serve 375 families, representing a 20% increase over 2024's record. Applications and program inquiries can be submitted through the Foundation's website or by calling the 24/7 helpline at the number listed at nftdf.org.
